Statutory officers - also called independent officers - play an important part in holding the government accountable to the Legislative Assembly and to the public. They help the Members of the Legislative Assembly monitor and assess government programs, procedures, and performance. Statutory officers serve for fixed terms that vary according to the laws governing each position. Theses officers are appointed by, and report to, the Legislative Assembly. The reports of some officers are also reviewed by all-party parliamentary committees.
