The Order of British Columbia was established on April 21, 1989, to honour people “who have served with the greatest distinction and excelled in any field of endeavour benefiting the people of the province of B.C.”
Nominations received from the public are considered by a seven person advisory council, including the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and chaired by the Chief Justice of British Columbia, with final appointments made by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
Haida artist Bill Reid, scientist Michael Smith, and former Prime Minister Kim Campbell are among the recipients of the Order of British Columbia. The Chancellor of the Order of British Columbia - the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia - is also awarded the order.
The Order of British Columbia shares a display with the Medal of Good Citizenship in the Hall of Honour.
