Unveiled September 26, 2004, the B.C. Law Enforcement Memorial honours police and peace officers that have lost their lives in the line of duty in British Columbia. The term “peace officers” includes customs, fisheries, and conservation officers, federal and provincial corrections staff, and sheriffs. The names of fallen officers are inscribed on the memorial's columns.
The panels between these columns represent many of the province's past and present law enforcement agencies. The front of the memorial - the panel facing away from the Parliament Buildings - commemorates the commitment of each law enforcement agency to serve British Columbia and its citizens. Both panels adjacent to the front depict the law enforcement agencies that were active in B.C. at the time of the memorial's unveiling in 2004. The final panel - on the side facing the Parliament Buildings - is dedicated to law enforcement agencies that no longer exist, but have had a meaningful impact on the many communities throughout British Columbia.
The annual memorial event for British Columbia's fallen law enforcement members takes place on the last Sunday of September.
The Law Enforcement Memorial is located on the Legislative Precinct to the east of the back of the Parliament Buildings, along a pathway dedicated to honouring the fallen first responders of British Columbia.
