Each party caucus selects an MLA to serve as their caucus Whip. Whips ensure that all Members follow their caucus responsibilities, such as attending and participating in Assembly sittings and in committee meetings, and voting in line with the other Members of the caucus.
Whips are also responsible for enforcing party discipline, and they serve as a key communication link between party leadership and Private Members in the Legislative Assembly.

The word "Whip," according to early parliamentary history in England, is derived from the old fox hunting term "whipperin," the person who uses a whip to keep the hounds of the pack from straying.
