The first flagpole in this location was placed in 1865 but was replaced in 1926 with a pole that stood at 51 metres (165 feet) tall. It was made from an excellent specimen of Douglas fir, one of the most important and valuable types of timber wood in British Columbia.
After 90 years of service, the 1926 flagpole was decommissioned on April 1, 2016, due to increasing wood rot and deterioration of the flagpole's concrete base and wire supports. The new flagpole is 30 metres (98 feet) tall, made of steel, and painted white just like its predecessor.
The dimensions of the Canadian flag flown at the top of the flagpole are 4.57 metres by 2.28 metres (180 inches by 90 inches).
