In recognizing the outstanding citizens of British Columbia who work with humility to make their community a better place to live, the Legislative Assembly amended the Provincial Symbols and Honours Act, 1996, to create the Medal of Good Citizenship in 2015. This provincial honour is awarded to nominees who have greatly contributed to improving the social fabric of the province.
Recipients of the medal have come from a range of different backgrounds and walks of life, but all have been recognized for the leadership roles they have in their community.
The medal itself is crafted to represent many of the important elements that make B.C. unique. Made of silver, the front of the medal has the B.C. Shield in its centre with the text "Good Citizenship British Columbia" inscribed around the edge. The back of the medal features a depiction of the provincial flower, the Pacific dogwood, with the text "Generosity, Service, Selflessness" similarly inscribed around the edge.
The Medal of Good Citizenship shares a display with the Order of British Columbia in the Hall of Honour.
