The Local Elections Statutes Amendment Act, 2014, extended the terms of office for local elected officials from three to four years. The Act also moved the general voting day from November to October, which applies to elected officials in municipalities, regional districts, the Islands Trust, parks boards, and school boards.
Although the Legislative Assembly has the authority to make laws regarding local governments, Elections B.C. - the non-partisan organization responsible for managing provincial elections - administers the advertising rules and the campaign financing and disclosure rules for local elections. The nomination process and managing the voting and ballots are up to local elections officers, marking a significant difference from elections at the provincial level, where Elections B.C. manages almost all aspects.
