Sitting on Committees

While the Committee of Supply is used to debate Estimates, and a Committee of the Whole is used to debate sections of proposed legislation (bills), parliamentary committees provide a smaller venue for more detailed study of specific matters.

These parliamentary committees are made up of a small group of Private Members from government and opposition. Parliamentary committees receive their instructions and mandate from the Legislative Assembly and must report their findings and recommendations back to the Legislative Assembly.

Parliamentary committee meetings typically take place outside of the regular sitting hours of the Legislative Assembly, including during non-sitting weeks. The frequency and length of meetings can vary depending on a committee’s mandate and work. Committees may also travel the province as part of a public consultation to seek input from British Columbians.

Members serving on a parliamentary committee often take a collaborative and consensus-based approach to their work, including any reports and recommendations made to the Legislative Assembly.
