First person of Filipino heritage elected to the Legislative Assembly (2009)
Mable Elmore was born in Langley, British Columbia and later attended the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Active in both her community and the peace movement, she has since worked on a wide range of immigrant, social justice and workers’ rights issues.
A transit operator for 10 years, Elmore played an active role within her union – Canadian Auto Workers Local 111 – and led successful campaigns as a transit advocate.
Elmore ran successfully as the New Democratic Party candidate for the riding of Vancouver-Kensington in the 2009 provincial general election. With her victory, she became the first person of Filipino heritage elected to the Legislative Assembly. Elmore was re-elected in 2013, serving in a variety of Opposition roles, including as spokesperson for immigration and temporary foreign workers and as deputy spokesperson for finance. Elmore was re-elected in the 2017 provincial general election. Following the change of government in British Columbia in July 2017, she served as Parliamentary Secretary for Poverty Reduction.
